about

LPthree is a collaborative album by Lewis Pierre, Matt Hoyne and Paddy Fitzgerald.

Born from a reluctant band leader’s desire to play good music with good friends, the LPthree origin begins in the front bars of pubs in Melbourne’s inner north. A rhythm section on countless gigs behind horn players and singers, these sporadic trio gigs were a chance for us to play whatever we want and however we want.

Before each member came to crossroads in each of their lives, we wanted to document the energy we had on these gigs: the songs, the intensity, the weird, the loud, the soft, the not quite right, the in-between the cracks. But we understood that transferring this energy to a record is easier said than done.

But we tried anyway. We went in with no real expectations. If we thought it was cool then we’d put out an album and, if we thought it sucked, you wouldn’t be reading these liner notes.

We think some of the energy is here in these recorded songs. We really hope you feel some it, too.

“In this small snapshot there is a sense that LPthree’s explorations and capabilities have a vast potential. They are developing their own dialect that nods to the great guitar trios but pushes typical conservative boundaries and tropes. The result is expression that extends beyond traditional idiom and reaches for (without straining) a multitude of musical paths, bringing folk, indie, songwriter, rock and more into their melting pot of interpersonal language.
This music bristles and bubbles over the edge of the familiar into exciting untread territories.” - Sam Anning
